Backyard Fruit Drive Needs YOU Lake Worth!!! Please read below

City of Lake Worth-Backyard Fruit Drive

Background Information

There are many homes and properties in the City of Lake Worth with fruit trees such as avocadoes, mangoes, citrus (oranges, grapefruits, tangerines etc). On many occasions, fruits that are not used are left on the trees. These fruits eventually drop off the tree and pose both a disposal and a sanitation problem to the property owners. Instead of the produce remaining and being wasted, it can be utilized as food for local food insecure residents.

General Objective

To gather fresh produce from homes and properties with the approval from respective property owners, and distribute that produce to local agencies serving food insecure residents within the City of Lake Worth.

Specific Objectives

• 100 volunteers would gather produce from 25 local homes and properties in the City of Lake Worth.
• 2500 pounds of fresh produce gathered will be distributed to agencies that work with food insecure residents in the City of Lake Worth.

Implementation

• Volunteers will be enlisted, trained and supervised by the Palm Beach County Community Food Alliance in coordination with Lake Worth based CROS Ministries.
• Volunteers will sign a “Release of Liability” prior to conducting work.
• Property owners will sign a “Release of Liability” prior to work being conducted.
• Property owners will also be encouraged to pick fruit on their own for collection coordinated ahead of time.
• Volunteers would assemble on a particular day, in a particular area and begin harvest from one property to the next. This operation would be closely supervised by a program coordinator bearing in mind the important aspect of safety at all times.
• Food will be distributed through current Palm Beach County Community Food Alliance distribution system.
